Sponsor A Child FAQ

.

Will my child write to me?

Due to limited resources and the language barrier you will not receive letters from your sponsored child.

Can I write to my child?

Yes. But because of the need to translate letters into Chinese and limited time of the staff, we cannot guarantee regular communication. You are encouraged to limit communication to 2 or 3 times a year.

What specific benefits will the child I sponsor receive?

Regular health checks by community health workers, adherence to treatment regimes and immediate access to and transportation to physicians. Sponsorship also allows the child to receive nutritional supplements, critical for treatment effectiveness.

How long should my child sponsorship last?

The idea behind the sponsorship is to provide stable support for the growth of these children. We would like sponsors to stick with their children for several years, but we understand that financial conditions change and that you may no longer be able to continue support. We do ask, however, that sponsors complete a given year's commitment once started.

May I send gifts to my child?
Is there anything I cannot send to my sponsored child?

While small gifts are allowed, we ask that they be kept to an absolute minimum. We encourage simple gifts such as coloring books, crayons, stickers, etc. Gifts should be sent no more than once per year, should be valued at less than $25, keeping in mind that the children don't speak English. Large or expensive gifts, or any electronics, cause difficulties in clearing customs and create extra work for program staff.

If I must discontinue my child sponsorship, what happens to the child I'm helping?

Children will not be dropped from PATS if their sponsor decides to discontinue their support. General funds will be used to assure their well-being.

Will I be the only person sponsoring the child I'm helping?

Children at the Needs level may be supported by two sponsors if enough sponsors enroll. At the Growth level only one sponsor will be paired with a child.
